Accumulative Vertical Capstan: Why We Choose 600mm Vertical Capstan for Incoming Wire ≥6.5mm on Straight-Line Wire Drawing Machines

In recent years, more and more users of straight-line wire drawing machines prefer to upsize the first capstan from the standard 560mm to 600mm. What is behind this trend? This larger-size first capstan we supply is our custom accumulative vertical capstan with pulley assembly, specially developed for thick raw wire drawing.

1. What Is an Accumulative Vertical Capstan?

An accumulative vertical capstan is a custom optional first capstan design for straight-line wire drawing machines. It comes with an integrated pulley structure and adopts a vertical layout. In our standard straight-line drawing configuration, most capstans are 560mm inclined type. The 600mm accumulative vertical capstan is only deployed for production lines processing thick raw wire of 6.5mm diameter or above. It is not a standard fitting. Customers drawing medium or fine wire below 6.5mm will use the regular 560mm inclined capstans for better cost efficiency.

2. Core Technical Challenge of Drawing Thick Wire ≥6.5mm

Thick steel wire (≥6.5mm) has high yield strength. Unlike thin wire, breakage rarely happens during drawing. The primary difficulty is traction control. When a thick wire is pulled under heavy drawing force, it relies on friction between the wire and tungsten carbide overlay of the capstan for power transmission. A smaller 560mm capstan provides a limited wire wrap angle. The contact friction may not be enough to hold the high-strength thick wire steadily. Once slippage occurs, the wire will rub against the capstan surface. Slippage causes two severe losses:

  1. Rapid abrasion of the 0.5mm-thick tungsten carbide overlay on the capstan, shortening service life;
  2. Surface scratches on the finished steel wire, leading to non-conforming products for fasteners, spring and high-tensile steel applications.

3. Key Benefits of the 600mm Accumulative Vertical Capstan

3.1 Anti-slip traction (reason for increasing capstan diameter to 600mm)

By increasing the capstan diameter to 600mm, we expand the wrap angle of thick wire on the capstan surface. Larger wrap angle creates stable and sufficient friction traction. This eliminates slip risk for high-yield-strength wire. It protects both the WC coated capstan and wire surface, keeping stable drawing quality and lowering maintenance frequency. This is the fundamental reason many manufacturers upgrade the first capstan to 600mm for thick wire production.

3.2 Wire storage for easier butt welding operation (core advantage of accumulative vertical structure)

The vertical accumulative design can hold a larger reserve of wire on the capstan. If wire breakage occurs at downstream drawing stages, operators do NOT need to unwind all wire from this first capstan. They can directly use the accumulated wire on this capstan for butt welding. This saves massive operation time. The stored wire also acts as a buffer, helping reduce the risk of wire breakage during abnormal tension fluctuation. This is the main practical purpose for adopting the accumulative vertical layout.

4. Cooling specification consistent with our standard capstans

The 600mm vertical accumulative capstan shares the same mature cooling system as our regular capstans. It adopts narrow-slot internal water cooling plus outer forced air cooling. Under continuous working conditions, the capstan surface temperature can be controlled below 60℃, avoiding high-temperature damage to the tungsten carbide coating.

5. Suitable application scope

✅ Recommended: Incoming wire ≥6.5mm, low / medium / high carbon steel, spring steel wire, raw wire for nail and fastener production with high yield strength

❌ Not necessary: Copper wire, aluminum wire, welding wire and thin alloy wire below 6.5mm. The 560mm inclined capstan meets all requirements with better economy.

FAQ

Q1: Is the 600mm accumulative vertical capstan supplied as standard? A1: No. It is a custom optional configuration. Standard straight-line wire drawing machines use 560mm inclined capstans.

Q2: Do I need to change other machine parts if I choose this capstan? A2: We match the reducer, power and tension system together when designing the whole line, to match the traction demand of thick wire drawing.
